Amongtheseprisonerswasanoldlawyer—amanwithastrongfaceandadauntlessmien.Threeyearspast,hehadwrittenapamphletagainsttheLordChancellor,accusinghimofinjustice,andhadbeenpunishedforitbythelossofhisearsinthepillory,anddegradationfromthebar,andinadditionhadbeenfined3,000poundsandsentencedtoimprisonmentforlife.Latelyhehadrepeatedhisoffence;andinconsequencewasnowundersentencetolosewhatremainedofhisears,payafineof5,000pounds,bebrandedonbothcheeks,andremaininprisonforlife
