AtthesoundofMiles’svoicethewomanhadstartedslightly,andhercheekshadflushed;shewastremblingnow.Shestoodstill,duringanimpressivepauseofseveralmoments;thenslowlyliftedupherheadandlookedintoHendon’seyeswithastonyandfrightenedgaze;thebloodsankoutofherface,dropbydrop,tillnothingremainedbutthegreypallorofdeath;thenshesaid,inavoiceasdeadastheface,"Iknowhimnot!"andturned,withamoanandastifledsob,andtotteredoutoftheroom.
MilesHendonsankintoachairandcoveredhisfacewithhishands.Afterapause,hisbrothersaidtotheservants—
"Youhaveobservedhim.Doyouknowhim?"
Theyshooktheirheads;thenthemastersaid—
"Theservantsknowyounot,sir.Ifearthereissomemistake.Youhaveseenthatmywifeknewyounot."
