Butatnight,inhisdreams,thesethingswereforgotten,andhewasonhisthrone,andmasteragain.This,ofcourse,intensifiedthesufferingsoftheawakening—sothemortificationsofeachsucceedingmorningofthefewthatpassedbetweenhisreturntobondageandthecombatwithHugo,grewbittererandbitterer,andharderandhardertobear.
Themorningafterthatcombat,HugogotupwithaheartfilledwithvengefulpurposesagainsttheKing.Hehadtwoplans,inparticular.Onewastoinflictupontheladwhatwouldbe,tohisproudspiritand‘imagined’royalty,apeculiarhumiliation;andifhefailedtoaccomplishthis,hisotherplanwastoputacrimeofsomekindupontheKing,andthenbetrayhimintotheimplacableclutchesofthelaw.
