ThemotiveprofessedwashisconvictionofitsbeingowingtohimselfthatWickham’sworthlessnesshadnotbeensowellknownastomakeitimpossibleforanyyoungwomanofcharactertoloveorconfideinhim. Hegenerouslyimputedthewholetohismistakenpride,andconfessedthathehadbeforethoughtitbeneathhimtolayhisprivateactionsopentotheworld. Hischaracterwastospeakforitself. Hecalledit,therefore,hisdutytostepforward,andendeavourtoremedyanevilwhichhadbeenbroughtonbyhimself. Ifhehadanothermotive,Iamsureitwouldneverdisgracehim. Hehadbeensomedaysintown,beforehewasabletodiscoverthem; buthehadsomethingtodirecthissearch,whichwasmorethanwehad; andtheconsciousnessofthiswasanotherreasonforhisresolvingtofollowus.
