           Shewasmorealivetothedisgracewhichherwantofnewclothesmustreflectonherdaughter’snuptials,thantoanysenseofshameatherelopingandlivingwithWickhamafortnightbeforetheytookplace. 

           Elizabethwasnowmostheartilysorrythatshehad,fromthedistressofthemoment,beenledtomakeMr.Darcyacquaintedwiththeirfearsforhersister; forsincehermarriagewouldsoshortlygivetheproperterminationtotheelopement,theymighthopetoconcealitsunfavourablebeginningfromallthosewhowerenotimmediatelyonthespot. 

           Shehadnofearofitsspreadingfartherthroughhismeans. Therewerefewpeopleonwhosesecrecyshewouldhavemoreconfidentlydepended; but,atthesametime,therewasnoonewhoseknowledgeofasister’sfrailtywouldhavemortifiedhersomuchnot,however,fromanyfearofdisadvantagefromitindividuallytoherself,for,atanyrate,thereseemedagulfimpassablebetweenthem. HadLydia’smarriagebeenconcludedonthemosthonourableterms,itwasnottobesupposedthatMr.Darcywouldconnecthimselfwithafamilywhere,toeveryotherobjection,wouldnowbeaddedanallianceandrelationshipofthenearestkindwithamanwhomhesojustlyscorned. 

           Fromsuchaconnectionshecouldnotwonderthathewouldshrink. Thewishofprocuringherregard,whichshehadassuredherselfofhisfeelinginDerbyshire,couldnotinrationalexpectationsurvivesuchablowasthis. Shewashumbled,shewasgrieved;sherepented,thoughshehardlyknewofwhat. Shebecamejealousofhisesteem,whenshecouldnolongerhopetobebenefitedbyit. Shewantedtohearofhim,whenthereseemedtheleastchanceofgainingintelligence. Shewasconvincedthatshecouldhavebeenhappywithhim,whenitwasnolongerlikelytheyshouldmeet.
