           Mr.CollinsreturnedmostpunctuallyonMondayfortnight,buthisreceptionatLongbournwasnotquitesograciousasithadbeenonhisfirstintroduction. Hewastoohappy,however,toneedmuchattention;andluckilyfortheothers,thebusinessoflove-makingrelievedthemfromagreatdealofhiscompany. ThechiefofeverydaywasspentbyhimatLucasLodge,andhesometimesreturnedtoLongbournonlyintimetomakeanapologyforhisabsencebeforethefamilywenttobed. 

           Mrs.Bennetwasreallyinamostpitiablestate. Theverymentionofanythingconcerningthematchthrewherintoanagonyofill-humour,andwherevershewentshewassureofhearingittalkedof. ThesightofMissLucaswasodioustoher. Ashersuccessorinthathouse,sheregardedherwithjealousabhorrence. WheneverCharlottecametoseethem,sheconcludedhertobeanticipatingthehourofpossession;andwhenevershespokeinalowvoicetoMr.Collins,wasconvincedthattheyweretalkingoftheLongbournestate,andresolvingtoturnherselfandherdaughtersoutofthehouse,assoonasMr.Bennetweredead. Shecomplainedbitterlyofallthistoherhusband. 

           "Indeed,Mr.Bennet,"saidshe,"itisveryhardtothinkthatCharlotteLucasshouldeverbemistressofthishouse,thatIshouldbeforcedtomakewayforher,andlivetoseehertakeherplaceinit!" 

           "Mydear,donotgivewaytosuchgloomythoughts. Letushopeforbetterthings. LetusflatterourselvesthatImaybethesurvivor." 

           ThiswasnotveryconsolingtoMrs.Bennet,andtherefore,insteadofmakinganyanswer,shewentonasbefore. 

           "Icannotbeartothinkthattheyshouldhaveallthisestate. Ifitwasnotfortheentail,Ishouldnotmindit."
