           ItwasverystrangethatheshouldcometoLongbourninsteadoftoLucasLodge;itwasalsoveryinconvenientandexceedinglytroublesome. Shehatedhavingvisitorsinthehousewhileherhealthwassoindifferent,andloverswereofallpeoplethemostdisagreeable. SuchwerethegentlemurmursofMrs.Bennet,andtheygavewayonlytothegreaterdistressofMr.Bingley’scontinuedabsence. 

           NeitherJanenorElizabethwerecomfortableonthissubject. DayafterdaypassedawaywithoutbringinganyothertidingsofhimthanthereportwhichshortlyprevailedinMerytonofhiscomingnomoretoNetherfieldthewholewinter; areportwhichhighlyincensedMrs.Bennet,andwhichsheneverfailedtocontradictasamostscandalousfalsehood. 

           EvenElizabethbegantofearnotthatBingleywasindifferentbutthathissisterswouldbesuccessfulinkeepinghimaway. UnwillingasshewastoadmitanideasodestructiveofJane’shappiness,andsodishonorabletothestabilityofherlover,shecouldnotpreventitsfrequentlyoccurring. Theunitedeffortsofhistwounfeelingsistersandofhisoverpoweringfriend,assistedbytheattractionsofMissDarcyandtheamusementsofLondonmightbetoomuch,shefeared,forthestrengthofhisattachment. 

           AsforJane,heranxietyunderthissuspensewas,ofcourse,morepainfulthanElizabeth’s,butwhatevershefeltshewasdesirousofconcealing,andbetweenherselfandElizabeth,therefore,thesubjectwasneveralludedto. Butasnosuchdelicacyrestrainedhermother,anhourseldompassedinwhichshedidnottalkofBingley,expressherimpatienceforhisarrival,orevenrequireJanetoconfessthatifhedidnotcomebackshewouldthinkherselfveryillused. ItneededallJane’ssteadymildnesstobeartheseattackswithtolerabletranquillity.
