           Elizabethmadenoanswer,andtookherplaceintheset,amazedatthedignitytowhichshewasarrivedinbeingallowedtostandoppositetoMr.Darcy,andreadinginherneighbours’looks,theirequalamazementinbeholdingit. Theystoodforsometimewithoutspeakingaword; andshebegantoimaginethattheirsilencewastolastthroughthetwodances,andatfirstwasresolvednottobreakit; tillsuddenlyfancyingthatitwouldbethegreaterpunishmenttoherpartnertoobligehimtotalk,shemadesomeslightobservationonthedance. Hereplied,andwasagainsilent. Afterapauseofsomeminutes,sheaddressedhimasecondtimewith: "Itisyourturntosaysomethingnow,Mr.Darcy. Italkedaboutthedance,andyououghttomakesomesortofremarkonthesizeoftheroom,orthenumberofcouples." 

           Hesmiled,andassuredherthatwhatevershewishedhimtosayshouldbesaid. 

           "Verywell. Thatreplywilldoforthepresent. PerhapsbyandbyImayobservethatprivateballsaremuchpleasanterthanpublicones. Butnowwemaybesilent." 

           "Doyoutalkbyrule,then,whileyouaredancing?" 

           "Sometimes. Onemustspeakalittle,youknow. Itwouldlookoddtobeentirelysilentforhalfanhourtogether; andyetfortheadvantageofsome,conversationoughttobesoarranged,asthattheymayhavethetroubleofsayingaslittleaspossible." 

           "Areyouconsultingyourownfeelingsinthepresentcase,ordoyouimaginethatyouaregratifyingmine?"
