AfterawhilePippinfellfastasleep,andwasliftedupandborneawaytoabowerunderthetrees;therehewaslaiduponasoftbedandslepttherestofthenightaway.Samrefusedtoleavehismaster.WhenPippinhadgone,hecameandsatcurledupatFrodo’sfeet,whereatlasthenoddedandclosedhiseyes.Frodoremainedlongawake,talkingwithGildor.
Theyspokeofmanythings,oldandnew,andFrodoquestionedGildormuchabouthappeningsinthewideworldoutsidetheShire.Thetidingsweremostlysadandominous:ofgatheringdarkness,thewarsofMen,andtheflightoftheElves.AtlastFrodoaskedthequestionthatwasnearesttohisheart:
"Tellme,Gildor,haveyoueverseenBilbosinceheleftus?"Gildorsmiled."Yes,"heanswered."Twice.Hesaidfareweltousonthisveryspot.ButIsawhimonceagain,farfromhere."HewouldsaynomoreaboutBilbo,andFrodofellsilent.
"Youdonotaskmeortellmemuchthatconcernsyourself,Frodo,"saidGildor."ButIalreadyknowalittle,andIcanreadmoreinyourfaceandinthethoughtbehindyourquestions.YouareleavingtheShire,andyetyoudoubtthatyouwillfindwhatyouseek,oraccomplishwhatyouintend,orthatyouwilleverreturn.Isnotthatso?"
"Itis,"saidFrodo;’butIthoughtmygoingwasasecretknownonlytoGandalfandmyfaithfulSam."HelookeddownatSam,whowassnoringgently.
"ThesecretwillnotreachtheEnemyfromus,"saidGildor.
