Septemberwaspassingandtherewasstillnonewsofhim.TheBirthday,andtheremoval,drewnearer,andstillhedidnotcome,orsendword.BagEndbegantobebusy.SomeofFrodo’sfriendscametostayandhelphimwiththepacking:therewasFredegarBolgerandFolcoBoffin,andofcoursehisspecialfriendsPippinTookandMerryBrandybuck.Betweenthemtheyturnedthewholeplaceupside-down.
OnSeptember20thtwocoveredcartswentoffladentoBuckland,conveyingthefurnitureandgoodsthatFrodohadnotsoldtohisnewhome,bywayoftheBrandywineBridge.ThenextdayFrodobecamerealyanxious,andkeptaconstantlook-outforGandalf.Thursday,hisbirthdaymorning,dawnedasfairandclearasithadlongagoforBilbo’sgreatparty.stillGandalfdidnotappear.IntheeveningFrodogavehisfarewelfeast:itwasquitesmall,justadinnerforhimselfandhisfourhelpers;buthewastroubledandfellinnomoodforit.Thethoughtthathewouldsosoonhavetopartwithhisyoungfriendsweighedonhisheart.Hewonderedhowhewouldbreakittothem.
Thefouryoungerhobbitswere,however,inhighspirits,andthepartysoonbecameverycheerfulinspiteofGandalf’sabsence.Thedining-roomwasbareexceptforatableandchairs,butthefoodwasgood,andtherewasgoodwine:Frodo’swinehadnotbeenincludedinthesaletotheSackvile-Bagginses.
"Whateverhappenstotherestofmystuff,whentheS.-B.sgettheirclawsonit,atanyrateIhavefoundagoodhomeforthis!"saidFrodo,ashedrainedhisglass.ItwasthelastdropofOldWinyards.
