Itwasimpossibletofindyou,Frodo,inthewilderness,anditwouldhavebeenfollytotrywithalltheNineatmyheels.SoIhadtotrusttoAragorn.ButIhopedtodrawsomeofthemoff,andyetreachRivendellaheadofyouandsendouthelp.FourRidersdidindeedfollowme,buttheyturnedbackafterawhileandmadefortheFord,itseems.Thathelpedalittle,fortherewereonlyfive,notnine,whenyourcampwasattacked.
"Ireachedhereatlastbyalonghardroad,uptheHoarwellandthroughtheEttenmoors,anddownfromthenorth.IttookmenearlyfourteendaysfromWeathertop,forIcouldnotrideamongtherocksofthetroll-fells,andShadowfaxdeparted.Isenthimbacktohismaster;butagreatfriendshiphasgrownbetweenus,andifIhaveneedhewillcomeatmycall.ButsoitwasthatIcametoRivendellonlythreedaysbeforetheRing,andnewsofitsperilhadalreadybeenbroughthere-whichprovedwellindeed.
"Andthat,Frodo,istheendofmyaccount.MayElrondandtheothersforgivethelengthofit.Butsuchathinghasnothappenedbefore,thatGandalfbroketrystanddidnotcomewhenhepromised.AnaccounttotheRing-bearerofsostrangeaneventwasrequired,Ithink.
"Well,theTaleisnowtold,fromfirsttolast.Hereweallare,andhereistheRing.Butwehavenotyetcomeanynearertoourpurpose.Whatshallwedowithit?"
