‘Therearetrolls!’Pippinpanted.‘Downinaclearinginthewoodsnotfarbelow.Wegotasightofthemthroughthetree-trunks.Theyareverylarge!’
‘Wewillcomeandlookatthem,’saidStrider,pickingupastick.Frodosaidnothing,butSamlookedscared.
Thesunwasnowhigh,anditshonedownthroughthehalf-strippedbranchesofthetrees,andlittheclearingwithbrightpatchesoflight.Theyhaltedsuddenlyontheedge,andpeeredthroughthetree-trunks,holdingtheirbreath.
Therestoodthetrolls:threelargetrolls.Onewasstooping,andtheothertwostoodstaringathim.
Striderwalkedforwardunconcernedly.‘Getup,oldstone!’hesaid,andbrokehisstickuponthestoopingtroll.
Nothinghappened.Therewasagaspofastonishmentfromthehobbits,andthenevenFrodolaughed.‘Well!’hesaid.‘Weareforgettingourfamilyhistory!ThesemustbetheverythreethatwerecaughtbyGandalf,quarrellingovertherightwaytocookthirteendwarvesandonehobbit.’
‘Ihadnoideawewereanywhereneartheplace!’saidPippin.Heknewthestorywell.BilboandFrodohadtolditoften;butasamatteroffacthehadnevermorethanhalfbelievedit.
