Theyfoundapassagebetweentwohillsthatledthemintoavalleyrunningsouth-east,thedirectionthattheywishedtotake;buttowardstheendofthedaytheyfoundtheirroadagainbarredbyaridgeofhighland;itsdarkedgeagainsttheskywasbrokenintomanybarepointsliketeethofabluntedsaw.Theyhadachoicebetweengoingbackorclimbingoverit.
Theydecidedtoattempttheclimb,butitprovedverydifficult.BeforelongFrodowasobligedtodismountandstrugglealongonfoot.Evensotheyoftendespairedofgettingtheirponyup,orindeedoffindingapathforthemselves,burdenedastheywere.Thelightwasnearlygone,andtheywereallexhausted,whenatlasttheyreachedthetop.Theyhadclimbedontoanarrowsaddlebetweentwohigherpoints,andthelandfellsteeplyawayagain,onlyashortdistanceahead.Frodothrewhimselfdown,andlayonthegroundshivering.Hisleftarmwaslifeless,andhissideandshoulderfeltasificyclawswerelaiduponthem.Thetreesandrocksabouthimseemedshadowyanddim.
‘Wecannotgoanyfurther,’saidMerrytoStrider.‘IamafraidthishasbeentoomuchforFrodo.Iamdreadfullyanxiousabouthim.Whatarewetodo?DoyouthinktheywillbeabletocurehiminRivendell,ifweevergetthere?’
‘Weshallsee,’answeredStrider.‘ThereisnothingmorethatIcandointhewilderness;anditischieflybecauseofhiswoundthatIamsoanxioustopresson.ButIagreethatwecangonofurthertonight.’
