Frodoreturnedhisgazebutsaidnothing;andStridermadenofurthersign.HisattentionseemedsuddenlytobefixedonPippin.TohisalarmFrodobecameawarethattheridiculousyoungTook,encouragedbyhissuccesswiththefatMayorofMichelDelving,wasnowactuallygivingacomicaccountofBilbo’sfarewellparty.HewasalreadygivinganimitationoftheSpeech,andwasdrawingneartotheastonishingDisappearance.
Frodowasannoyed.Itwasaharmlessenoughtaleformostofthelocalhobbits,nodoubt:justafunnystoryaboutthosefunnypeopleawaybeyondtheRiver;butsome(oldButterbur,forinstance)knewathingortwo,andhadprobablyheardrumourslongagoaboutBilbo’svanishing.ItwouldbringthenameofBagginstotheirminds,especiallyiftherehadbeeninquiriesinBreeafterthatname.
Frodofidgeted,wonderingwhattodo.Pippinwasevidentlymuchenjoyingtheattentionhewasgetting,andhadbecomequiteforgetfuloftheirdanger.FrodohadasuddenfearthatinhispresentmoodhemightevenmentiontheRing;andthatmightwellbedisastrous.
