TherewerealsomanyfamiliesofhobbitsintheBree-land;andtheyclaimedtobetheoldestsettlementofHobbitsintheworld,onethatwasfoundedlongbeforeeventheBrandywinewascrossedandtheShirecolonized.TheylivedmostlyinStaddlethoughthereweresomeinBreeitself,especiallyonthehigherslopesofthehill,abovethehousesoftheMen.TheBigFolkandtheLittleFolk(astheycalledoneanother)wereonfriendlyterms,mindingtheirownaffairsintheirownways,butbothrightlyregardingthemselvesasnecessarypartsoftheBree-folk.Nowhereelseintheworldwasthispeculiar(butexcellent)arrangementtobefound.
TheBree-folk,BigandLittle,didnotthemselvestravelmuch;andtheaffairsofthefourvillagesweretheirchiefconcern.OccasionallytheHobbitsofBreewentasfarasBuckland,ortheEastfarthing;butthoughtheirlittlelandwasnotmuchfurtherthanaday’sridingeastoftheBrandywineBridge,theHobbitsoftheShirenowseldomvisitedit.AnoccasionalBucklanderoradventurousTookwouldcomeouttotheInnforanightortwo,buteventhatwasbecominglessandlessusual.TheShire-hobbitsreferredtothoseofBree,andtoanyothersthatlivedbeyondtheborders,asOutsiders,andtookverylittleinterestinthem,consideringthemdullanduncouth.
