‘HereisaprettytoyforTomandforhislady!Fairwasshewholongagoworethisonhershoulder.Goldberryshallwearitnow,andwewillnotforgether!’
Foreachofthehobbitshechoseadagger,long,leaf-shaped,andkeen,ofmarvellousworkmanship,damaskedwithserpent-formsinredandgold.Theygleamedashedrewthemfromtheirblacksheaths,wroughtofsomestrangemetal,lightandstrong,andsetwithmanyfierystones.Whetherbysomevirtueinthesesheathsorbecauseofthespellthatlayonthemound,thebladesseemeduntouchedbytime,unrusted,sharp,glitteringinthesun.
