Alowdoor-likeopeningappearedattheendofthechamberbeyondFrodo’sfeet;andtherewasTom’shead(hat,feather,andall)framedagainstthelightofthesunrisingredbehindhim.Thelightfelluponthefloor,anduponthefacesofthethreehobbitslyingbesideFrodo.Theydidnotstir,butthesicklyhuehadleftthem.Theylookednowasiftheywereonlyverydeeplyasleep.

Atthesewordstherewasacryandpartoftheinnerendofthechamberfellinwithacrash.Thentherewasalongtrailingshriek,fadingawayintoanunguessabledistance;andafterthatsilence.
‘Come,friendFrodo!’saidTom.‘Letusgetoutontocleangrass!Youmusthelpmebearthem.’
TogethertheycarriedoutMerry,Pippin,andSam.AsFrodoleftthebarrowforthelasttimehethoughthesawaseveredhandwrigglingstill,likeawoundedspider,inaheapoffallenearth.Tomwentbackinagain,andtherewasasoundofmuchthumpingandstamping.Whenhecameouthewasbearinginhisarmsagreatloadoftreasure:thingsofgold,silver,copper,andbronze;manybeadsandchainsandjewelledornaments.Heclimbedthegreenbarrowandlaidthemallontopinthesunshine.
