           Quicklyhereturned,bearingalargeandladentray.ThenTomandGoldberrysetthetable;andthehobbitssathalfinwonderandhalfinlaughter:sofairwasthegraceofGoldberryandsomerryandoddthecaperingsofTom.Yetinsomefashiontheyseemedtoweaveasingledance,neitherhinderingtheother,inandoutoftheroom,androundaboutthetable;andwithgreatspeedfoodandvesselsandlightsweresetinorder.Theboardsblazedwithcandles,whiteandyelow.Tombowedtohisguests."Supperisready,"saidGoldberry;andnowthehobbitssawthatshewasclothedallinsilverwithawhitegirdle,andhershoeswerelikefishes’mail.ButTomwasallincleanblue,blueasrain-washedforget-me-nots,andhehadgreenstockings.

           Itwasasupperevenbetterthanbefore.ThehobbitsunderthespellofTom’swordsmayhavemissedonemealormany,butwhenthefoodwasbeforethemitseemedatleastaweeksincetheyhadeaten.Theydidnotsingorevenspeakmuchforawhile,andpaidcloseattentiontobusiness.Butafteratimetheirheartsandspiritrosehighagain,andtheirvoicesrangoutinmirthandlaughter.

           Aftertheyhadeaten,Goldberrysangmanysongsforthem,songsthatbeganmerrilyinthehilsandfellsoftlydownintosilence;andinthesilencestheysawintheirmindspoolsandwaterswiderthananytheyhadknown,andlookingintothemtheysawtheskybelowthemandthestarslikejewelsinthedepths.
