MerryandPippindraggedthemselvesforwardandlaydownwiththeirbackstothewilow-trunk.Behindthemthegreatcracksgapedwidetoreceivethemasthetreeswayedandcreaked.Theylookedupatthegreyandyelowleaves,movingsoftlyagainstthelight,andsinging.Theyshuttheireyes,andthenitseemedthattheycouldalmosthearwords,coolwords,sayingsomethingaboutwaterandsleep.Theygavethemselvesuptothespellandfellfastasleepatthefootofthegreatgreywilow.
