           Averyfewwereoverlookedbyaccident,butastheyturnedupallthesame,thatdidnotmatter.ManypeoplefromotherpartsoftheShirewerealsoasked;andtherewereevenafewfromoutsidetheborders.Bilbomettheguests(andadditions)atthenewwhitegateinperson.Hegaveawaypresentstoallandsundry—thelatterwerethosewhowentoutagainbyabackwayandcameinagainbythegate.Hobbitsgivepresentstootherpeopleontheirownbirthdays.Notveryexpensiveones,asarule,andnotsolavishlyasonthisoccasion;butitwasnotabadsystem.ActuallyinHobbitonandBywatereverydayintheyearitwassomebody’sbirthday,sothateveryhobbitinthosepartshadafairchanceofatleastonepresentatleastonceaweek.Buttheynevergottiredofthem.

           Onthisoccasionthepresentswereunusuallygood.Thehobbit-childrenweresoexcitedthatforawhiletheyalmostforgotabouteating.Thereweretoysthelikeofwhichtheyhadneverseenbefore,allbeautifulandsomeobviouslymagical.Manyofthemhadindeedbeenorderedayearbefore,andhadcomeallthewayfromtheMountainandfromDale,andwereofrealdwarf-make.

           Wheneveryguesthadbeenwelcomedandwasfinallyinsidethegate,thereweresongs,dances,music,games,and,ofcourse,foodanddrink.Therewerethreeofficialmeals:lunch,tea,anddinner(orsupper).Butlunchandteaweremarkedchieflybythefactthatatthosetimesalltheguestsweresittingdownandeatingtogether.Atothertimesthereweremerelylotsofpeopleeatinganddrinking—continuouslyfromelevensesuntilsix-thirty,whenthefireworksstarted.

           ThefireworkswerebyGandalf:theywerenotonlybroughtbyhim,butdesignedandmadebyhim;andthespecialeffects,setpieces,andflightsofrocketswereletoffbyhim.
