           WestayedtwodaysatStreatley,andgotourclotheswashed. Wehadtriedwashingthemourselves,intheriver,underGeorge’ssuperintendence,andithadbeenafailure. Indeed,ithadbeenmorethanafailure,becausewewereworseoffafterwehadwashedourclothesthanwewerebefore. Beforewehadwashedthem,theyhadbeenvery,verydirty,itistrue; buttheywerejustwearable. Afterwehadwashedthemwell,theriverbetweenReadingandHenleywasmuchcleaner,afterwehadwashedourclothesinit,thanitwasbefore. AllthedirtcontainedintheriverbetweenReadingandHenley,wecollected,duringthatwash,andworkeditintoourclothes.
