           ItseemedtoTomthathisschoolmatesneverwouldgetdoneholdinginquestsondeadcats,andthuskeepinghistroublepresenttohismind. SidnoticedthatTomneverwascoroneratoneoftheseinquiries,thoughithadbeenhishabittotaketheleadinallnewenterprises; henoticed,too,thatTomneveractedasawitnessandthatwasstrange; andSiddidnotoverlookthefactthatTomevenshowedamarkedaversiontotheseinquests,andalwaysavoidedthemwhenhecould. Sidmarvelled,butsaidnothing. However,eveninquestswentoutofvogueatlast,andceasedtotortureTom’sconscience. 

           Everydayortwo,duringthistimeofsorrow,Tomwatchedhisopportunityandwenttothelittlegratedjail-windowandsmuggledsuchsmallcomfortsthroughtothe"murderer"ashecouldgetholdof. Thejailwasatriflinglittlebrickdenthatstoodinamarshattheedgeofthevillage,andnoguardswereaffordedforit;indeed,itwasseldomoccupied. TheseofferingsgreatlyhelpedtoeaseTom’sconscience. 

           Thevillagershadastrongdesiretotar-and-featherInjunJoeandridehimonarail,forbody-snatching,butsoformidablewashischaracterthatnobodycouldbefoundwhowaswillingtotaketheleadinthematter,soitwasdropped.
