           Itwasthenagreedthatthenightshouldbepassedinthedeserteddwelling,andastoreofwoodfoundinacornerwassufficienttowarmit.Thedoorclosed,Pencroft,HerbertandSpilettremainedthere,seatedonabench,talkinglittlebutwonderingmuch.Theywereinaframeofmindtoimagineanythingorexpectanything.Theylistenedeagerlyforsoundsoutside.Thedoormighthaveopenedsuddenly,andamanpresentedhimselftothemwithouttheirbeingintheleastsurprised,notwithstandingallthatthehutrevealedofabandonment,andtheyhadtheirhandsreadytopressthehandsofthisman,thiscastaway,thisunknownfriend,forwhomfriendswerewaiting.

           Butnovoicewasheard,thedoordidnotopen.Thehoursthuspassedaway.
