           Thisspotwasraisedfromfiftytosixtyfeetabovethelevelofthesea.Theviewwasveryextensive,butbeyondthecapeitendedinUnionBay.NeithertheisletnorProspectHeightswasvisible,andcouldnotbefromthence,fortherisinggroundandthecurtainoftreesclosedthenorthernhorizon.

           Itisuselesstoaddthatnotwithstandingthewideextentofseawhichtheexplorerscouldsurvey,andthoughtheengineersweptthehorizonwithhisglass,novesselcouldbefound.

           Theshorewasofcourseexaminedwiththesamecarefromtheedgeofthewatertothecliff,andnothingcouldbediscoveredevenwiththeaidoftheinstrument.

           "Well,"saidGideonSpilett,"itseemswemustmakeupourmindstoconsoleourselveswiththinkingthatnoonewillcometodisputewithusthepossessionofLincolnIsland!"

           "Then,ifIunderstandyouright,captain,"saidHerbert,"thevesselhasleftagain?"
