           Fromtimetotimethecastawaysstoppedandshouted,thenlistenedforsomeresponsefromtheocean,fortheythoughtthatiftheengineerhadlanded,andtheyhadbeenneartotheplace,theywouldhaveheardthebarkingofthedogTop,evenshouldHardinghimselfhavebeenunabletogiveanysignofexistence.Theystoppedtolisten,butnosoundaroseabovetheroaringofthewavesandthedashingofthesurf.Thelittlebandthencontinuedtheirmarchforward,searchingintoeveryhollowoftheshore.

           Afterwalkingfortwentyminutes,thefourcastawaysweresuddenlybroughttoastandstillbythesightoffoamingbillowsclosetotheirfeet.Thesolidgroundendedhere.Theyfoundthemselvesattheextremityofasharppointonwhichtheseabrokefuriously.
