           Theinteriorofthecrater,whoseinclinationdidnotexceedthirtyfivetofortydegrees,presentednodifficultiesnorobstaclestotheascent.Tracesofveryancientlavawerenoticed,whichprobablyhadoverflowedthesummitofthecone,beforethislateralchasmhadopenedanewwaytoit.

           Astothevolcanicchimneywhichestablishedacommunicationbetweenthesubterraneanlayersandthecrater,itsdepthcouldnotbecalculatedwiththeeye,foritwaslostinobscurity.Buttherewasnodoubtastothecompleteextinctionofthevolcano.

           Beforeeighto’clockHardingandhiscompanionswereassembledatthesummitofthecrater,onaconicalmoundwhichswelledthenorthernedge.

           "Thesea,theseaeverywhere!"theycried,asiftheirlipscouldnotrestrainthewordswhichmadeislandersofthem.
