Hebegantoaccompanyhismotheronthemeat-trail,andhesawmuchofthekillingofmeatandbegantoplayhispartinit. Andinhisowndimwayhelearnedthelawofmeat. Thereweretwokindsoflife—hisownkindandtheotherkind. Hisownkindincludedhismotherandhimself. Theotherkindincludedalllivethingsthatmoved. Buttheotherkindwasdivided. Oneportionwaswhathisownkindkilledandate.Thisportionwascomposedofthenon-killersandthesmallkillers. Theotherportionkilledandatehisownkind,orwaskilledandeatenbyhisownkind. Andoutofthisclassificationarosethelaw. Theaimoflifewasmeat. Lifeitselfwasmeat. Lifelivedonlife. Thereweretheeatersandtheeaten. Thelawwas:EATORBEEATEN. Hedidnotformulatethelawinclear,settermsandmoraliseaboutit. Hedidnoteventhinkthelaw;hemerelylivedthelawwithoutthinkingaboutitatall.
