InSanQuentinprisonhehadprovedincorrigible. Punishmentfailedtobreakhisspirit. Hecoulddiedumb-madandfightingtothelast,buthecouldnotliveandbebeaten. Themorefiercelyhefought,themoreharshlysocietyhandledhim,andtheonlyeffectofharshnesswastomakehimfiercer. Straight-jackets,starvation,andbeatingsandclubbingswerethewrongtreatmentforJimHall;butitwasthetreatmenthereceived. ItwasthetreatmenthehadreceivedfromthetimehewasalittlepulpyboyinaSanFranciscoslum—softclayinthehandsofsocietyandreadytobeformedintosomething.
