           Thecubentertainedagreatrespectforhismother. Shecouldgetmeat,andsheneverfailedtobringhimhisshare. Further,shewasunafraidofthings. Itdidnotoccurtohimthatthisfearlessnesswasfoundeduponexperienceandknowledge. Itseffectonhimwasthatofanimpressionofpower. Hismotherrepresentedpower; andashegrewolderhefeltthispowerinthesharperadmonishmentofherpaw; whilethereprovingnudgeofhernosegaveplacetotheslashofherfangs. Forthis,likewise,herespectedhismother. Shecompelledobediencefromhim,andtheolderhegrewtheshortergrewhertemper. 

           Faminecameagain,andthecubwithclearerconsciousnessknewoncemorethebiteofhunger. Theshe-wolfranherselfthininthequestformeat. Sherarelysleptanymoreinthecave,spendingmostofhertimeonthemeat-trail,andspendingitvainly. Thisfaminewasnotalongone,butitwasseverewhileitlasted. Thecubfoundnomoremilkinhismother’sbreast,nordidhegetonemouthfulofmeatforhimself. 

           Before,hehadhuntedinplay,forthesheerjoyousnessofit;nowhehuntedindeadlyearnestness,andfoundnothing. Yetthefailureofitacceleratedhisdevelopment. Hestudiedthehabitsofthesquirrelwithgreatercarefulness,andstrovewithgreatercrafttostealuponitandsurpriseit. Hestudiedthewood-miceandtriedtodigthemoutoftheirburrows; andhelearnedmuchaboutthewaysofmoose-birdsandwoodpeckers.
