Whenitreared,themasterputthespurstoitandmadeitdropitsfore-legsbacktoearth,whereuponitwouldbeginkickingwithitshind-legs. WhiteFangwatchedtheperformancewithincreasinganxietyuntilhecouldcontainhimselfnolonger,whenhespranginfrontofthehorseandbarkedsavagelyandwarningly.
Thoughheoftentriedtobarkthereafter,andthemasterencouragedhim,hesucceededonlyonce,andthenitwasnotinthemaster’spresence. Ascamperacrossthepasture,ajackrabbitrisingsuddenlyunderthehorse’sfeet,aviolentsheer,astumble,afalltoearth,andabrokenlegforthemaster,wasthecauseofit. WhiteFangspranginarageatthethroatoftheoffendinghorse,butwascheckedbythemaster’svoice.
