Andtheconspiracieskeptcoming.Mostrecently,ofcourse,hadbeentheearthshakingdiscoverythatDaVinci’sfamedAdorationoftheMagiwashidingadarksecretbeneathitslayersofpaint.ItalianartdiagnosticianMaurizioSeracinihadunveiledtheunsettlingtruth,whichtheNewYorkTimesMagazinecarriedprominentlyinastorytitled»TheLeonardoCover-Up.»
SeracinihadrevealedbeyondanydoubtthatwhiletheAdoration’sgray-greensketchedunderdrawingwasindeedDaVinci’swork,thepaintingitselfwasnot.ThetruthwasthatsomeanonymouspainterhadfilledinDaVinci’ssketchlikeapaint-by-numbersyearsafterDaVinci’sdeath.Farmoretroubling,however,waswhatlaybeneaththeimpostor’spaint.PhotographstakenwithinfraredreflectographyandXraysuggestedthatthisroguepainter,whilefillinginDaVinci’ssketchedstudy,hadmadesuspiciousdeparturesfromtheunderdrawing…asiftosubvertDaVinci’strueintention.Whateverthetruenatureoftheunderdrawing,ithadyettobemadepublic.Evenso,embarrassedofficialsatFlorence’sUffiziGalleryimmediatelybanishedthepaintingtoawarehouseacrossthestreet.
