           Sophiehadhalfexpectedtofindhergrandfatherasleepatthishourandwasexcitedtoseethehousetwinklingwithlights.Herdelightturnedtosurprise,however,whenshearrivedtofindthedrivewayfilledwithparkedcarsMercedeses,BMWs,Audis,andaRolls-Royce.

           Sophiestaredamomentandthenburstoutlaughing.Mygrand-père,thefamousrecluse!JacquesSaunière,itseemed,wasfarlessreclusivethanhelikedtopretend.ClearlyhewashostingapartywhileSophiewasawayatschool,andfromthelooksoftheautomobiles,someofParis’smostinfluentialpeoplewereinattendance.
