OnetimeIaskedmyfatherifheidentifiedwithanyofthecharactersinhisstories,andtomysurprisehesaiditwasStilgar,theruggedleaderoftheFremen.IhadbeenthinkingofDadmoreasthedignified,honorableDukeLeto,ortheheroic,swashbucklingPaul,ortheloyalDuncanIdaho.Mullingthisover,IrealizedStilgarwastheequivalentofaNativeAmericanchiefinDune—apersonwhorepresentedanddefendedtime-honoredwaysthatdidnotharmtheecologyoftheplanet.FrankHerbertwasthat,andagreatdealmore.Asachild,hehadknownaNativeAmericanwhohintedthathehadbeenbanishedfromhistribe,amannamedIndianHenrywhotaughtmyfathersomeofthewaysofhispeople,includingfishing,theidentificationofedibleandmedicinalplantsintheforest,andhowtofindredantsandprotein-richgrubwormsforfood.
WhenhesetupthedesertplanetofArrakisandthegalacticempire
encompassingit,FrankHerbertpittedwesterncultureagainstprimitivecultureandgavethenodtothelatter.InDunehewrote,“Polishcomesfromthecities;wisdomfromthedesert.”(Later,inhismainstreamnovelSoulCatcher,hewoulddosomethingsimilarandwouldfavoroldwaysovermodernways).
