           Inspiteofasurgeofanger,PaulknewthatStilgarspokethetruth.IttookalongminuteandthefulleffortofthetraininghehadreceivedfromhismotherforPaultorecaptureafeelingofcalm.“Iapologize,”hesaid.“Itwillnothappenagain.”

           “Inatightposition,alwaysleaveyourselfasecondary,someonetotakethemakerifyoucannot,”Stilgarsaid.“Rememberthatweworktogether.Thatway,we’recertain.Weworktogether,eh?”

           HeslappedPaul’sshoulder.

           “Weworktogether,”Paulagreed.

           “Now,”Stilgarsaid,andhisvoicewasharsh,“showmeyouknowhowtohandleamaker.Whichsideareweon?”

           Paulglanceddownatthescaledringsurfaceonwhichtheystood,notedthecharacterandsizeofthescales,thewaytheygrewlargerofftohisright,smallertohisleft.Everyworm,heknew,movedcharacteristicallywithonesideupmorefrequently.Asitgrewolder,thecharacteristicup-sidebecameanalmostconstantthing.Bottomscalesgrewlarger,heavier,smoother.Topscalescouldbetoldbysizealoneonabigworm.

           Shiftinghishooks,Paulmovedtotheleft.Hemotionedflankersdowntoopensegmentsalongthesideandkeepthewormonastraightcourseasitrolled.

           Whenhehaditturned,hemotionedtwosteersmenoutofthelineandintopositionsahead.

           “Ach,haiiiii-yoh!”heshoutedinthetraditionalcall.Theleft-sidesteersmanopenedaringsegmentthere.
