           “Andbedamnedtome?”Shesmiledwryly,acrisscrossofwrinklesintheoldface.“Verywell:‘Thatwhichsubmitsrules.’

           Hefeltastonishment:shewastalkingaboutsuchelementarythingsastensionwithinmeaning.Didshethinkhismotherhadtaughthimnothingatall?

           “That’sahint?”heasked.

           “We’renotheretobandywordsorquibbleovertheirmeaning,”theoldwomansaid.“Thewillowsubmitstothewindandprospersuntilonedayitismanywillowsawallagainstthewind.Thisisthewillow’spurpose.”

           Paulstaredather.Shesaidpurposeandhefeltthewordbuffethim,reinfectinghimwithterriblepurpose.Heexperiencedasuddenangerather:fatuousoldwitchwithhermouthfullofplatitudes.
