Theknifemoveddown,slashedthebindingsofhislegs.Paulfeltthehandonhisbacktohurlhimdownontothesand,feignedalurchagainstthedoorframeforpurchase,turnedasthoughtocatchhimself,lashedoutwithhisrightfoot.
Thetoewasaimedwithaprecisionthatdidcredittohislongyearsoftraining,asthoughallofthattrainingfocusedonthisinstant.Almosteverymuscleofhisbodycooperatedintheplacementofit.ThetipstruckthesoftpartofCzigo’sabdomenjustbelowthesternum,slammedupwardwithterribleforceovertheliverandthroughthediaphragmtocrushtherightventricleoftheman’sheart.
Withonegurglingscream,theguardjerkedbackwardacrosstheseats.Paul,unabletousehishands,continuedhistumbleontothesand,landingwitharollthattookuptheforceandbroughthimbacktohisfeetinonemotion.Hedovebackintothecabin,foundtheknifeandhelditinhisteethwhilehismothersawedherbonds.Shetookthebladeandfreedhishands.
“Icould’vehandledhim,”shesaid.“He’dhavehadtocutmybindings.Thatwasafoolishrisk.”
