           “Asandwavemovingtowardthecrawler.They’llhaveseismicprobesonthesurface,too.Wormssometimestraveltoodeepforthewavetoshow.”Kynesswunghisgazearoundthesky.“Shouldbeacarryallwingaround,butIdon’tseeit.”

           “Thewormalwayscomes,eh?”Halleckasked.

           “Always.”

           Paulleanedforward,touchedKynes’shoulder.“Howbiganareadoeseachwormstakeout?”

           Kynesfrowned.Thechildkeptaskingadultquestions.

           “Thatdependsonthesizeoftheworm.”

           “What’sthevariation?”theDukeasked.

           “Bigonesmaycontrolthreeorfourhundredsquarekilometers.Smallones

           HebrokeoffastheDukekickedonthejetbrakes.Theshipbuckedasitstailpodswhisperedtosilence.Stubwingselongated,cuppedtheair.Thecraftbecameafull‘thopterastheDukebankedit,holdingthewingstoagentlebeat,pointingwithhislefthandofftotheeastbeyondthefactorycrawler.

           “Isthatwormsign?”

           KynesleanedacrosstheDuketopeerintothedistance.

           PaulandHalleckwerecrowdedtogether,lookinginthesamedirection,andPaulnotedthattheirescort,caughtbythesuddenmaneuver,hadsurgedahead,butnowwascurvingback.Thefactorycrawlerlayaheadofthem,stillsomethreekilometersaway.
