Amutedgaspranaroundthetable.Eventheyoungeraides,whohadbeenbetrayingsomeboredom,satupstraighterandexchangedwide-eyedlooks.
Halleckmurmured:“‘Fortheyshallsuckoftheabundanceoftheseasandofthetreasurehidinthesand.’”
“Yousee,gentlemen,”Letosaid.“IsthereanyoneheresonaivehebelievestheHarkonnenshavequietlypackedupandwalkedawayfromallthismerelybecausetheEmperororderedit?”
Therewasageneralshakingofheads,murmurousagreement.
“Wewillhavetotakeitatthepointofthesword,”Letosaid.HeturnedtoHawat.“This’dbeagoodpointtoreportonequipment.Howmanysandcrawlers,harvesters,spicefactories,andsupportingequipmenthavetheyleftus?”
“Afullcomplement,asitsaysintheImperialinventoryauditedbytheJudgeoftheChange,myLord,”Hawatsaid.Hegesturedforanaidetopasshimafolder,openedthefolderonthetableinfrontofhim.“Theyneglecttomentionthatlessthanhalfthecrawlersareoperable,thatonlyaboutathirdhavecarryallstoflythemtospicesands—thateverythingtheHarkonnensleftusisreadytobreakdownandfallapart.We’llbeluckytogethalftheequipmentintooperationandluckieryetifafourthofit’sstillworkingsixmonthsfromnow.
