Anon,heorderedallthetreesinthatpartoftheforesttobecutdown,leavingnoshelterorambush;andwiththeirtrunksandbranchesmadeamightybarricade,whichshuttheminandhinderedtheirescape.Afterthreedays,broughtnightodeathbyfamine,theyofferedtogiveuptheirwealthofgoldandsilverspoils,andtodepartforthwithintheiremptyships;moreover,topaytributetoKingArthurwhentheyreachedtheirhome,andtoleavehimhostagestillallwaspaid.
Thisoffer,therefore,heaccepted,andsufferedthemtodepart.Butwhentheyhadbeenafewhoursatsea,theyrepentedoftheirshamefulflight,andturnedtheirshipsbackagain,andlandingatTotnes,ravagedallthelandasfarastheSevern,and,burningandslayingonallsides,benttheirstepstowardsBath.
WhenKingArthurheardoftheirtreacheryandtheirreturn,heburnedwithangertillhiseyesshoneliketwotorches,andthenhesworeamightyoathtorestnomoreuntilhehadutterlydestroyedthoseenemiesofGodandman,andhadrootedthemforeveroutofthelandofBritain.
