Thekingwasastonishedathiswords,butcommandedthemagicianstocomeandsitdownbeforeMerlin,whocriedtothem—
“Becauseyeknownotwhatitisthathindersthefoundationofthecastle,yehaveadvisedmybloodforacementtoit,asifthatwouldavail;buttellmenowratherwhatthereisbelowthatground,forsomethingthereissurelyunderneaththatwillnotsufferthetowertostand?”
Thewizardsatthesewordsbegantofear,andmadenoanswer.ThensaidMerlintotheking—
“Ipray,Lord,thatworkmenmaybeorderedtodigdeepdownintothegroundtilltheyshallcometoagreatpoolofwater.”
Thisthenwasdone,andthepooldiscoveredfarbeneaththesurfaceoftheground.
Then,turningagaintothemagicians,Merlinsaid,“Tellmenow,falsesycophants,whatthereisunderneaththatpool?”—buttheyweresilent.Thensaidhetotheking,“Commandthispooltobedrained,andatthebottomshallbefoundtwodragons,greatandhuge,whichnowaresleeping,butwhichatnightawakeandfightandteareachother.Attheirgreatstruggleallthegroundshakesandtrembles,andsocastsdownthytowers,which,therefore,neveryetcouldfindsecurefoundations.”
Thekingwasamazedatthesewords,butcommandedthepooltobeforthwithdrained;andsurelyatthebottomofitdidtheypresentlydiscoverthetwodragons,fastasleep,asMerlinhaddeclared.
ButVortigernsatuponthebrinkofthepooltillnighttoseewhatelsewouldhappen.
