Yettheoccasion,austereandbareaspovertycouldmakeit,wokeinDavidamoodoftendernessandpeace.Theloweringcloudshadgonefromthesky,allmorningithadrained,andtheafternoonhadhadasoftautumnfreshness.HehadprayedwithRichie,buthisprayershadbeenalsoforhimself,andashewalkedbehindthecoffinonthepathbythebackoftheHillofDeerhispetitionseemedtohavebeenanswered.Hehadanassuranceofhisvocation.Thecrowdatthekirkyard,thosetoil-wornfolkwhoseimmortalsoulshadbeengivenintohischarge,movedhimtoastrangeexultation.
