AsMarchdrewtoitsclosethewheelsoflifebeganonceagaintoruncreakinglyinWoodilee.Thefrostdisappearedunderaweekofsouthwesterlygales,andthenthewindmovedtotheeastandblewdryandblighting,sothattheleanbeastsshiveredintheinfields.Thegrossunseasonableherbageofthewinterhadgone,anditpromisedtobeabackwardspring.Themenwentoutfeeblytothefarm-work,andtheploughingbegan,thoughthedraught-oxenweresopoorinconditionthattheworkmovedslowly.Thesiege,too,wasraised.JohnnieDowonceagainshowedhiscautiousfaceintheclachanandbroughtnewsoftheouterworld;thepack-horsesagainstruggledthroughCarnwathMoss;andtherecamewordfromKirkAllerthatthemeetingofthePresbyterytoadjudicateonDavid’scasewasfixedforadayinApril.Mr.JamesrodeoverfromCauldshawandthekirkwasopened,butDaviddidnotrenewhispreachingsatthekirkyardgate.
