Nightly,inthelightmistsofthelateSeptember,whenpinetreesstoodupoutofvapourlikemountains,andthesmellofwoodlandripenesswasnotyettingedwithdecay,DavidandKatrinethreadedtheaislesandclamberedamongthelongbracken,tillapinpointoflightshowedfrombesidearockandwaspresentlyrevealedasKerr’sbivouac.Theywouldsitlatewithhim,listeningtohistalesandgivinghimthenewsoftheglens,whileowlshootedintheboughsandfromthehigherlevelscamethefaintcryingofcurlews.TherewasmuchbusinesstobedonebetweenMarkandCalidon--businessofNicholasHawkshaw’s,whohadbeendulyputtothehorn,andoverwhosegoods,bytheintriguesofMistressGrizel,afriendlycuratorhadbeenappointed,andbusinessofhisownanentthetackofCrossbasket--andKatrinecarrieddailymessagesbyletterandbywordofmouth.Whenhislegwashealedtherewasacertainpolishtobegiventohisappearance,andtheladiesofCalidonwerebusywiththeirneedles.
