HehadnodoubtthattheDevilandhismyrmidonswerepresentintheWoodinbodilyform,minglingwiththeworshippers,andthatthetongueswhichhehadheardwereinverytruthmutteringsofthelost.Thereweretimeswhenordinaryhumanfearloosenedhisknees,andhelongedtofleefromtheparishasfromaplaceaccursed.Buthiscouragewouldreturn,andhisfaith,forheknewthatthearmiesofHeavenwereonhisside,andwrathwouldcastoutfear,wrathandhorrorattheseducersofhisflock.Neverthelessinthesedayshisnerveswerefrayed,helayawakeofnightslisteninganxiouslyfornoiseswithout,andhewouldawakesuddenlyinthesweatofanamelessterror.
