Whenhepassedalonghisdecksheshoulderedthosehecameacrossbrutally;buttheMalaydeckhandshadlearnedtododgeoutofhisway.Hehadtobringhimselftotoleratethembecauseofthenecessarymanuallaboroftheshipwhichmustbedone.HehadtostruggleandplanandschemetokeeptheSofalaafloat—andwhatdidhegetforit?Notevenenoughrespect.Theycouldnothavegivenhimenoughofthatifalltheirthoughtsandalltheiractionshadbeendirectedtothatend.Thevanityofpossession,thevaingloryofpower,hadpassedawaybythistime,andthereremainedonlythematerialembarrassments,thefearoflosingthatpositionwhichhadturnedoutnotworthhaving,andananxietyofthoughtwhichnoabjectsubservienceofmencouldrepay.
