Рапунцель

           Andshewassohard-heartedthatshetookRapunzelandputherinawasteanddesertplace,whereshelivedingreatwoeandmisery. ThesamedayonwhichshetookRapunzelawayshewentbacktothetowerintheeveningandmadefasttheseveredlocksofhairtothewindow-hasp,andtheKing’ssoncameandcried, 

           "Rapunzel,Rapunzel! Letdownyourhair." 

           Thensheletthehairdown, andtheKing’ssonclimbedup,butinsteadofhisdearestRapunzelhefoundthewitchlookingathimwithwickedglitteringeyes. 

           "Aha!"criedshe,mockinghim, "youcameforyourdarling,butthesweetbirdsitsnolongerinthenest,andsingsnomore; thecathasgother,andwillscratchoutyoureyesaswell! Rapunzelislosttoyou;youwillseehernomore." TheKing’ssonwasbesidehimselfwithgrief,andinhisagonyhesprangfromthetower:heescapedwithlife,butthethornsonwhichhefellputouthiseyes. Thenhewanderedblindthroughthewood,eatingnothingbutrootsandberries,anddoingnothingbutlamentandweepforthelossofhisdearestwife. 

           SohewanderedseveralyearsinmiseryuntilatlasthecametothedesertplacewhereRapunzellivedwithhertwin-childrenthatshehadborne,aboyandagirl. Atfirstheheardavoicethathethoughtheknew,andwhenhereachedtheplacefromwhichitseemedtocomeRapunzelknewhim,andfellonhisneckandwept. Andwhenhertearstouchedhiseyestheybecameclearagain,andhecouldseewiththemaswellasever.
