Rapunzelhadbeautifullonghairthatshonelikegold. Whensheheardthevoiceofthewitchshewouldundothefasteningoftheupperwindow,unbindtheplaitsofherhair,andletitdowntwentyellsbelow,andthewitchwouldclimbupbyit.
AftertheyhadlivedthusafewyearsithappenedthatastheKing’ssonwasridingthroughthewood,hecametothetower; andashedrewnearheheardavoicesingingsosweetlythathestoodstillandlistened. ItwasRapunzelinherlonelinesstryingtopassawaythetimewithsweetsongs. TheKing’ssonwishedtogointoher,andsoughttofindadoorinthetower,buttherewasnone. Soherodehome,butthesonghadenteredintohisheart,andeverydayhewentintothewoodandlistenedtoit. Once,ashewasstandingthereunderatree,hesawthewitchcomeup,andlistenedwhileshecalledout,
"ORapunzel,Rapunzel! Letdownyourhair."
ThenhesawhowRapunzelletdownherlongtresses,andhowthewitchclimbedupbyitandwentintoher,andhesaidtohimself, "SincethatistheladderIwillclimbit,andseekmyfortune." Andthenextday,assoonasitbegantogrowdusk,hewenttothetowerandcried,
"ORapunzel,Rapunzel! Letdownyourhair."
Andsheletdownherhair,andtheKing’ssonclimbedupbyit.
