"Because,"exclaimedDorothy,"Iwouldn’tletherhavemyheadforhercollection,andtakeanold,cast-offheadinexchangeforit."
"Idonotblameyou,"exclaimedOzma,promptly."IwillseethePrincessatonce,andobligehertoliberateyou."
"Oh,thankyouvery,verymuch!"criedDorothy,whoassoonassheheardthesweetvoiceofthegirlishRulerofOzknewthatshewouldsoonlearntoloveherdearly.
Ozmanowdroveherchariotaroundtothethirddoorofthewing,uponwhichtheTinWoodmanboldlyproceededtoknock.
AssoonasthemaidopenedthedoorOzma,bearinginherhandherivorywand,steppedintothehallandmadeherwayatoncetothedrawing-room,followedbyallhercompany,excepttheLionandtheTiger.Andthetwenty-sevensoldiersmadesuchanoiseandaclatterthatthelittlemaidNandaranawayscreamingtohermistress,whereuponthePrincessLangwidere,rousedtogreatangerbythisrudeinvasionofherpalace,camerunningintothedrawing-roomwithoutanyassistancewhatever.
