Assoonasthelastbitofdesertwaspassedandalltheprocession,fromthebeautifulanddaintyOzmatothelastsoldier,hadreachedthegrassymeadowsoftheLandofEv,themagiccarpetrolleditselftogetherandentirelydisappeared.
ThenthechariotdriverturnedherLionandTigerintoabroadroadwayleadinguptothepalace,andtheothersfollowed,whileDorothystillgazedfromhertowerwindowineagerexcitement.
Theycamequiteclosetothefrontdoorofthepalaceandthenhalted,theScarecrowdismountingfromhisSaw-Horsetoapproachthesignfastenedtothedoor,thathemightreadwhatitsaid.
Dorothy,justabovehim,couldkeepsilentnolonger.
"HereIam!"sheshouted,asloudlyasshecould."Here’sDorothy!"
"Dorothywho?"askedtheScarecrow,tippinghisheadtolookupwarduntilhenearlylosthisbalanceandtumbledoverbackward.

"Why,hello,Dorothy!"saidtheScarecrow."Whatintheworldareyoudoingupthere?"
