15. The Emperor's Tin Castle

           Buttheaxeslippedsooftenandcutoffpartsofhim—whichhehadreplacedwithtin—thatfinallytherewasnofleshleft,nothingbuttin;sohebecamearealtinwoodman.ThewonderfulWizardofOzhadgivenhimanexcellenthearttoreplacehisoldone,andhedidn’tatallmindbeingtin.Everyonelovedhim,helovedeveryone;andhewasthereforeashappyasthedaywaslong.

           TheEmperorwasproudofhisnewtincastle,andshowedhisvisitorsthroughalltherooms.Everybitofthefurniturewasmadeofbrightlypolishedtin—thetables,chairs,beds,andall—eventhefloorsandwallswereoftin.

           "Isuppose,"saidhe,"thattherearenocleverertinsmithsinalltheworldthantheWinkies.ItwouldbehardtomatchthiscastleinKansas;wouldn’tit,littleDorothy?"

           "Veryhard,"repliedthechild,gravely.

           "Itmusthavecostalotofmoney,"remarkedtheshaggyman.

           "Money!MoneyinOz!"criedtheTinWoodman."Whataqueeridea!Didyousupposewearesovulgarastousemoneyhere?"

           "Whynot?"askedtheshaggyman.

           "Ifweusedmoneytobuythingswith,insteadofloveandkindnessandthedesiretopleaseoneanother,thenweshouldbenobetterthantherestoftheworld,"declaredtheTinWoodman."FortunatelymoneyisnotknownintheLandofOzatall.Wehavenorich,andnopoor;forwhatonewishestheothersalltrytogivehim,inordertomakehimhappy,andnooneinallOzcarestohavemorethanhecanuse."

           "Good!"criedtheshaggyman,greatlypleasedtohearthis."Ialsodespisemoney—amaninButterfieldowesmefifteencents,andIwillnottakeitfromhim.
